Deane's 2009 Motorcycle Trip

South Africa

Nov 12, Swaziland to St Lucia

 Day 6 - 388 Km (240) Miles

This was mainly a riding day to position ourselves for a wild animal park visit.

Again we rode in mountainous areas too steep for normal farming, and the area was dotted with small villages and family homes here and there.  There was really no cattle ranching, but cattle were at the side of the road, as well as off in areas where there were no fences.  We did have to dodge cows on the rode once in a while.

While there was no farming in the usual sense, there was a lot of tree-farming and some banana growing.  There were new fields of both trees and bananas as they planted farther and farther up the hills.

The tour group is perking along very well.  Today, the 12th, finishes thru day six.

We stayed in quite the "tents" in the country of Swaziland, to soak up some culture.  It was OK, but when I found thousands of flying ants in the morning in my outside shower, the outside toilet, and outside wash basin, and monkeys running around trying to get into various places, I wondered how I should take that, culture-wise.  We survived and went on.

We got through the border between Swaziland and South Africa with a little delay, but not bad.  fortunately we hit the border crossing just before a large bus filled with bus-touring people or we would have had a hot wait in the direct sun.

Along the rest of the ride, there were lots of tree farms in South Africa, too.  It appears that big money is going into these tree farms in these two countries.  The trees grown are pines and eucalyptus, and they are used mainly for pulp and paper.
