Deane's 2009 Motorcycle Trip

South Africa

Nov 4 &5, - Flight to Johannesburg

It doesn't seem like there is much to say about a long trans-continental flight, but maybe just a record of the hours and miles spent to get here might be interesting.

From Albuquerque, I flew to Atlanta, Georgia, and then had a long wait for the flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg, South Africa.  The interesting parts of the trans-continental flight were how many hours it took, how many miles it flew, and whether it had to re-fuel for that distance.

The flight took 14 1/2 hours, with a tailwind, flew 8,500 miles, and didn't have to re-fuel for that tremendous flight length!  This was a Boeing 777, and it seemed like it held 200 people (at 9-across seating).  I guess the number of people was more like 150, but it seemed like more.  But to take that much of a load and still fly 8.500 miles, is remarkable.

Any way, I'm in South Africa today, and ready to start on this new adventure.
